Two friends attempt an unprecedented set of disability events in Rwanda, raising awareness and funds for people living with disability in Africa. Read about the challenges and the charities below
“harebrained … sounds worryingly difficult”— Di Flynn
The Challenges
The wheelchair marathon
We are each pushing ourselves the full marathon distance (26.2 miles) in racing wheelchairs. The most daunting of all the events, this is not only physically demanding on the upper body, the long hours in the chair cause extreme pain in the back and hamstrings
The blind marathon
We are completing the full marathon distance (26.2 miles) as a pair, taking it in turns to either be blindfolded or guide the other person. On top of the physical challenge of a marathon, running without use of sight requires unflinching concentration from the guide throughout, constant communication and complete trust from the guided partner
The no-leg swim
With our legs tied together, we will complete a two kilometre swim across a lake using only our arms. Swimming without the use of legs feel highly unnatural and is astonishingly exhausting. We will be followed by a support boat for safety reasons
The Causes
Motivation believe in freedom through mobility. Without a wheelchair, millions of disabled people in the developing world can’t leave their homes, go to school or to work. Many are left to lie on the floor. Many more die from preventable complications. Most live in extreme poverty. Motivation's wheelchairs and services are creating a fairer society where everyone has the freedom to live, love, work and play
Handicap International work in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict and disaster. They work alongside disabled and vulnerable people to help meet their basic needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights

We would greatly appreciate your support for these two fantastic charities, which will make all the hours on the track and in the pool over the past 8 months completely worthwhile.
